CSS sprites are cool and useful

Thursday, May 2nd, 2019 by Servage
How CSS Sprites Work There is an interesting story about Vilfredo Pareto, an economist who made an observation on the wealth of most of the nations in UN and found that 80% of the wealth of a nation is in the hand of 20% of the people in that country. This became famous as the 80/20 rule in the economic world there after. In our computing world especially in case of web development and web developers who are focusing on performance optimization technique this same rule is working for the code. There are only 20% codes, which are consuming 80% time of the client-server interactions. This is particularly true for http requests. Us web programmers are ...

Build A Toolkit To Help Define Your Web Design Style

Sunday, November 4th, 2018 by Servage
In order to get good conversion rates and positive user experiences, user interface design is vital. Let’s take a look at some practical ideas to do that. Single Column Layout The first consideration in user interface (UI) is the page layout. In our previous web era, we were free to try various options for layout and among them, multi-column approach was common, since we then wanted to use screen space at a maximum level. Now, with mobile web, we are restricted to single column layout since panning on hand held devices is not advisable, along with the scrolling involved. With finger gestures, a visitor feels a natural ease and ...

Cheap and professional WordPress themes

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018 by Servage
Previous articles have covered a variety of sources for good Wordpress themes. One of the main problems is that often the good stuff costs money ;-) Like everything else, no one can afford to work for free, and good stuff deserves a reasonable price. Nevertheless lots of people are working with hobby-projects on the side. They just want a quick and nice solution. While there are various systems available open-source, like the vast amount of content management systems out there - the good design stuff is yet to be more publicly available. Elegant Themes has a membership-approach to sharing professional Wordpress themes among a large audience. By signing up ...

Manage your web development more efficiently

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018 by Servage
Web development goes though many stages. It all starts with a great idea or vision that turns into a real concept, the base for your application and business. Often multiple persons are involved in the project, it takes a team effort to be successful. And being successful is what it's all about, since no one can feed himself from great ideas alone. So how do you ensure success from the beginning? You can't! But what you definitely can do, is improve the odds. You can surround yourself and your project with skilled and ten-oriented people, you can use professional management tools, and much more. Another thing that you definitely can do, is to use a great tool to organize your collaborative effort, to streamline development and make sure everyone is pulling in the same direction.

There are many JavaScript tools out there, trying to help you adding some functionality to your website. Dialog, overlay, loader, image gallery, rating, social icons and many many more. The quality of those scripts is very different. And also the documentation and usage are at various levels. For new users to quickly find and integrate something without too many problems, both code quality and documentation are important. Beautiful color selection made easy

Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 by Servage
Have you ever been trying to figure out how to get the colors for your web project design to match each other? Or have you ever been stuck trying to find suitable colors for a website that should match an existing logo to integrate in the corporate identity? Color selection can be easy if you know exactly what you want, but mostly you are starting from scratch, maybe with an idea or preset main color. However, how do you define proper fitting colors to go along with the main color, to both fit the intended design and be aesthetic at the same time? Maybe you have heard of complementary colors? Being ...

Create a cool CSS-based tab-menu

Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 by Servage
We received a lot of great feedback for our CSS-based dropdown menu, so I thought it would be time for another little tutorial. This time showing how to create a nice-looking tab-menu, based purely on HTML and CSS. See a live tabmenu example here. First, we want to have the menu code created in HTML. I find that the most appropriate way of doing this, is by creating the menu as a list. Thereby non-supporting browsers will still show the menu as a list, which somewhat resembles a menu. Everyone else will see the cool tab-menu :-) <ul class="tabmenu"> <li><a href="">Overview</a></li> <li class="active"><a href="">About</a></li> <li><a href="">Products</a></li> ...

You are what you read

Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 by Servage
The time we spend online What is is that we spend so much time with in the online world (besides work)? Reading an interesting article about this the other day (offline, can you believe it?), I learned that West Europeans spend about 1 hour every day online, reading blogs and news (not work, or other productive stuff, just the daily private catching up with personal interests). On top of that, they spend 15 min every day, checking if new blog entries or news have been posted... I couldn't help but wonder, if we are all really getting to that point where we - on top of consuming a lot of information via the Internet - also spend another ...

Free icons for web developers

Monday, June 19th, 2017 by Servage
iconsA website with no images would look quite dull, and making graphics from scratch can be a difficult task. Since not all developers are graphic designers, many free and paid icon sets and libraries have become popular among front-end developers. They allow you to easily place a large variety of icons on a website. Here is a collection of such icon libraries that are popular among developers in 2017. Glyphicons Glyphicons is an icon library that become popular with Bootstrap since it is built into the framework.
