Servage Hosting account – back Up functionalities

Did you know that at Servage, we make all the backups on your files and databases available to you directly in your own home directory? If not, we definitely recommend you read this post!

Most have ever needed to recover data from a backup – whether it’s your laptop that crashed, your phone’s latest OS crashed, or an update of your WordPress made the page unusable. The third scenario is most common for our customers to have suffered (although we are sometimes consulted in the other examples also ).

In this blog post we will go through three ways to get your backups of your databases and files yourself from your Servage web hosting account.


How are my recoverable backups saved?


Every night, a backup is made of all your databases (regardless of type) and these are then added to your own home directory in the folder “db_backup” and thus become part of your own filter tree. In addition, we use something called “snapshots” to take regular backups of the changes of your files (of course we also take complete backups for disaster recoveries on entire systems etc) which in a way makes you get a simpler version management system on your files. You can then access these yourself (read rights) via the path “.snapshot” in your own home directory, and can easily pick out exactly what you want.

These snapshots are taken according to two schedules – on an hourly basis (about every three hours) and every night – and they are saved for about 1 week back . Since the database backup directory (db_backup) also becomes a part of this snapshot schedule, these are also saved for about a week backwards.


How do I get them?


There are some different methods to access these however, which all fit differently well for different purposes and levels of knowledge. The files are in one place, but it may require some navigation through a client to access them.

1. Via SSH

If you are familiar with easier navigation and commands via the linux terminal, this is (in my opinion) the best way to access your backup files. All you need to do is log in to your SSH account and go directly to the root directory “.snapshot” (via the command “cd. Snapshot”). Once there is a subdirectory named after a date standard (the command “ls” lists these in a clear way) where a daily backup directory can be called eg. ”Daily.2020-10-21_0010”. 2. Via FTP

As with the SSH method, these backups can also be accessed via FTP in the same location. The only thing to keep in mind here is that you have to manually enter the path to the “.snapshot” directory: storage/content/yy/xxxxyy/.snapshot  (yy is the two last digits in the customer ID, and xxxxxyy the entire customer ID)


3. Via the File Manager

In your control panel under “Files” -> “File manager” this tool is used to manage backups and restorations very smoothly. This place is actually better suited to recreate single files, but instead has a simple interface to work with, and also has a built-in comparison tool with which you can easily find what separates a backup file from the current one. You can re-create single files via the Filemanager with that procedure: go in your Servage account t:

-> Files,

   ->Filemanager -> choose the directory/host you want to work on,

      -> make a right mouse click on the file for which you want to restore an older version,

        -> click on “Show previous content” from the context menu,

            -> choose the previous version you want to apply
