New Servage Hosting account – PHP & PHP versions

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019 by Helge

Logo_PHPAs you know, Servage supports PHP and can therefore be labelled as PHP-Hosting. However, what is PHP and what is the history of it?

PHP is a server side scripting language. that is used to develop Static websites or Dynamic websites or Web applications. PHP stands for Hypertext Pre-processor, that earlier stood for Personal Home Pages. You can use PHP e.g. if you want to create dynamic content which is fetched from a database. PHP may be embedded into HTML code, or used in combination with various web template systems, web content management systems, and web frameworks. To create php files is quite simple. You can e.g. take your txt editor and type your PHP code, combined with other web script languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript into the editor. Once that is done, save the files with the extension .php and a PHP file is done. Here is very simple “My first page” script which shall demonstrate how simple it is to set up .php files – of course applications can be way more complicated – depending on the purpose of the script

<html>
<body>
<?php echo “My first page; ?>
</body>
</html>

PHP has a long history which starts in 1994 when Rasmus Lerdorf wrote several Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs in C. Over the course of the years, new versions were released. Right now, several PHP 7.x versions are supported. In 2020, PHP 8 will be released. You find a detailed overview of the versions on e.g this page CLICK HERE. Today, PHP is the most commonly used language for developing web applications. It powers over 52,000,000+ websites  on the internet. There are numerous PHP frameworks available including – but not limited to – Laravel, Codeigniter, Symfony and others, thus making the PHP community the most authentic and the leading one in application development sphere. Popular pages build in PHP are e.g. Facebook, Yahoo, Wikipedia or WordPress. Of course, Servage supports PHP fully, and you can find serveral PHP versions in your control panel – from Version 5.3 to 7.3 – via the Servage control panel, you can choose the PHP version which fits your purposes best. HERE, you find the guideline how to change the PHP version for each host you run.

Why does Servage think PHP is a good choice? Here are some points we consider to be important:

  • PHP is open source and free.
  • Short learning curve compared to other languages such as JSP, ASP etc.
  • Large community document
  • Most web hosting servers support PHP by default unlike other languages such as ASP that need IIS. This makes PHP a cost effective choice.
  • PHP is regular updated to keep abreast with the latest technology trends.
  • Other benefit that you get with PHP is that it’s a server side scripting language; this means you only need to install it on the server and client computers requesting for resources from the server do not need to have PHP installed; only a web browser would be enough.
  • PHP has in built support for working hand in hand with MySQL
  • PHP is cross platform; this means you can deploy your application on a number of different operating systems such as windows, Linux, Mac OS etc.
  • and much more …
