Wednesday, July 31st, 2019 by Helge

domain_400x400The answer to the question in the headline is simply expressed: very many – or more specifically 342.4 million registered domain names under all the top-level domains on the market. This is stated in Verisign’s Domain Name Industry Brief report for the third quarter of 2018. This is an increase of 2.6 million domain names compared to the previous quarter, and the total number of registered domain names has increased by 11.7 million, or 3.5 percent, below the last 12 months.

The statistics for the distribution of top level domains are divided into what is called gTLD (general top level domain), ccTLD (country code top level domain, that is to say nations specific top level domains) and New gTLD (what is considered as “new” top level domains. familiar has opened up a lot in recent years and new top level domains have popped up like mushrooms from the earth).

Unsurprisingly is. com is by far the most common top-level domain among the classic gTLDs (and of course, at all) with a full 137.6 million registered domain names. Thereafter follows . net with 14.1 million,. org with 10.3 million and. info with 5 million registered domain names. Among ccTLDs, which make up 149.3 million of the total number of registered domain names, is China’s. cn at the top with 22.7 million registrations, closely followed by the New Zealand Empire Tokelaus. tk with 21.5 million (an explanation is of course that. tk is free to register, with a few exceptions). German. they are a good third with 16.2 million and then the UK’s with 11.9 million domain names (of course, it is a known fact that very many British players have primarily chosen .com in front of their national top level domain).

New top-level domains are gaining market share

The number of domain names under new top-level domains (New gTLD) now amounts to a total of 23.4 million (but that number is increasing rapidly all the time). Absolutely the most common is. top,. loan and .xyz , .club also . online – but almost half of the total number of new top-level domains is shown in the statistics under the term “other” which says a lot about how diversified that part of the domain market is.

The compilation also shows something called “Geographical New gTLD” – which is simply a designation of the many site-specific top-level domains (but which are not countries) that more and more cities have started to use. In total, there are now 735 625 registered top-level domains of that type, including tokyo top and bottom. London too . nyc on split silver site.
