Top PHP frameworks in 2016

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 by Servage

phpNew and junior PHP developers like to ask what PHP framework to learn and use. What are the pros and cons of each framework? This article gives an insight into what are the latest trends in PHP development and what frameworks are top notch in 2016. Let’s jump straight into action and have a look into the latest and greatest PHP frameworks of this year.

CodeIgniter is a framework from 2006. Although being old, as of writing, it is the second most popular PHP framework. CodeIgniter is a fast and lightweight framework for dynamic applications.

Many frameworks have been losing their popularity in the past years to a relatively new framework called Laravel. However, CodeIgniter has been able to keep its popularity at a good level. It is a moderately easy framework for beginners to start with, and it is suitable for small and medium-sized websites.

Symfony is a stable framework that scales well for big applications. Its target audience is large and enterprise websites but Symfony can also be used for small projects. In fact, Symfony is not only a framework but also a collection of components that can be used in any PHP projects.

Symfony is a full-stack framework, meaning it can be used for both front-end and back-end development. It is possible to build a full website without extending Symfony with external libraries. However, Symfony can also be used only as a back-end framework, such as an API for a website that has been built outside of Symfony.

Symfony comes in two versions: a long-term release which is suitable for enterprises who are looking for stability and a framework that doesn’t change too rapidly. The other choice is a newer version with all the latest features.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Symfony is that it is considered difficult to learn. Symfony is a powerful framework, and getting to know all of its features thoroughly takes time, and it is recommended to have previous knowledge of other frameworks before getting started with Symfony.

Laravel, a framework created in 2011, is the newest framework of this comparison. Despite being new, Laravel is by far the most widely used framework in 2016. Laravel is praised for its clear and thorough documentation, which makes it an excellent choice as the very first PHP framework for starters. Laravel comes with many features that are included right from the start or can be easily enabled, such as sending out emails, generating forms, handling user authentication, billing, password hashing and many more.

Laravel is a good choice if you intend to build a full application in PHP. If you are looking to build an API or any other back-end application, you may want to try Lumen, a lightweight version of Laravel specifically designed for fast applications like APIs.
