Remember to use HTML headings

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 by Servage

I often wonder where some webmasters have learned their HTML skills. It’s like the most basic knowledge has magically gone missing among all the other fancy things ones think important to have on their sites… Lot’s of jQuery magic happening, but somehow semantic content has been lost in the process. One of the first and most important steps to create semantically meaningful content is to use headings!

HTML headings

It really could not be eaiser. The HTML tags for headings are as follows:

<h1>This is heading 1</h1>
<h2>This is heading 2</h2>
<h3>This is heading 3</h3>
<h4>This is heading 4</h4>
<h5>This is heading 5</h5>
<h6>This is heading 6</h6>

Content structure

You can nest headings, have multiple at the same level (except level 1, otherwise it makes no sense) and put regular paragraphs of text inbetween. It’s really just like writing any other type of text: Structure it with meaningful titles etc. on the way, so the reader and search engine has a chance to understand.

<h1>This is heading 1</h1>

<h2>This is heading 2.1</h2>
<p>Some text below heading 2.1</p>

<h2>This is heading 2.2</h2>
<p>Some text below heading 2.2</p>

<h2>This is heading 2.3</h2>
<p>Some text below heading 2.3</p>

<h3>This is heading 3</h3>

Are you using HTML in the proper way, or are you cutting corners by using general tags like the div-container for purposes where more speicifc tags are available? You risk penalizing your own SEO performance byt ignoring proper tags.
