Get going with HTML5

Monday, April 2nd, 2012 by Servage

Starting out with HTML5 seems like a major obstacle to many developers. In my experience the most commonly used explanation is that they aren’t able to set aside lots of time to learn it. The same goes for CSS3. But hey, this is developers livelyhood. Staying up to date is important, and being able to use the current technologies is key to sustainability and long term success. So come on now!

Fortunately getting started with HTML5 is not difficult. Learning HTML5 is actually easy because it is so close to the HTML4 we all know. Furthermore the more you dig into HTML5 you will actually see that HTML5 is the HTML you always wanted. So much has become more logical and easy. You can actually get more space available in your head by throwing out lots of all the old tips and tricks to get around weirdness, which removed in HTML5 :-)

The only caveat is browser support, which isn’t compeltely up to date. But thankfully that is just a matter of time, giving you a little window of opportunity to get on top of the new stuff.

To help you get started, I have attached a HTML5 template to this post. It’s meant to be a basic example of how easy and simple it is… The expert HTML developer will notice a few things that have become easier.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
    <meta charset="UTF-8" />
