Voice control for web apps?

Thursday, October 6th, 2011 by Servage

Artificial intelligence has been a matter of interest for the IT world in many years. Real cognitive thinking, performed by machines, is the goal, as depicted in various movies, like iRobot. With Apple’s release of the new iPhone 4S, they are including their attempt of such a solution: Siri, the clever personal assistant. Speak to your device, and it will know how to help you. The presentation is pretty amazing, but will it really work? I guess we’ll have to wait until the first reviews emerge.

I’ve started thinking about when clever AI like this, will be implemented in regular websites and web apps. Speech recognition is not really the problem any more, but going from the correctly understood sentence, to a meaningful response, is very difficult. But wouldn’t it be cool to be able to speak to your web app, saying what you want, instead of clicking?

I’m not sure how this kind of technology could be implemented. Maybe in operating systems, or on a per-application basis. One thing is for sure: Even smarter systems are around the corner. Web 1.0 was about providing information, Web 2.0 was about doing it beautifully, so Web 3.0 could very well be about doing it quickly, maybe with artificial assistance.
